Extended Kitchen: Community Dinner and Presentation by Homies

Homies is a fashion line sparked by fighting injustices. Homies is a fashion line that explores the notions of home, from the perspective of being without a home. It is a fashion line inspired by memories related to homes left behind, and by the search for a new place to land. Homies is about how friends can become a substitute to survive feelings of not being grounded. Homies is a way out of the misery. Homies is a home in itself.
Behind the socially rebellious label is a collective comprising a group of roughly 15 designers. Most of the members were fleeing their home countries when they came to the Netherlands and found themselves in regulatory limbo. Recently they have been working on their fashion line ‘Homies’ in collaboration with Wouter van der Laan and Esther Meijer during a guest residency at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten.
This guest residency at the Rijksakademie was part of the collaborative project ARTECO: Artistic Ecologies between Neue Nachbarschaft/Moabit (Berlin), WHW (Zagreb) and the the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam).
Extended Kitchen is a space where we acknowledge that every ingredient on our table carries a story, and every meal we share is a political act that shapes our community.
Our discussions extend beyond the kitchen table, intertwining with the flavors on our plates. Extended Kitchen is a communal setting, where we foster relationships that go beyond casual encounters. We talk about the ingredients needed to cultivate connections and create a sense of belonging within our neighborhoods. It’s a melting pot of ideas, and voices that come together to create a tapestry of shared experiences.
This event is a part of the two-year collaborative project ARTECO: Artistic Ecologies: New Compasses, Tools and Alliances conceived in collaboration with WHW, Zagreb, the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam, and Neue Nachbarschaft/Moabit, Berlin.
